Biographical Notes

Louis Warshawsky is a recovering nerd and amateur musician. He programs other people's computers for money. For pleasure he studies the harpsichord, and has been a chorister since the age of 13. Mr. Warshawsky is one of the original members of the Ars Nova Singers. He also performs with Harmonia, a mixed 10-voice vocal group, and with DeCantors, Boulder's oldest doo-wop group.

The first computer Lou attempted to build in wood shop at age 13 never worked, although the stained pinewood case was lovely. Since then, his woodworking and technical skills have improved. See his résumé for details on the latter.

Novelties

The first two of these MIDI files were converted from transcriptions I made at the University of Illinois at Chicago during the 1970s. At that time my digital synthesizer was an IBM System/370 model 158 running Music V. It took nearly 14 minutes on the mainframe to render the digital recording of the Scarlatti Sonata. I then carried the computer tape across the campus to play it back on a DEC PDP-11.

The Händel is a transcription done in 1992 on a PC clone running Keynote. The last selection is a recent transcription of a piece I wrote while studying 18th century counterpoint at Arizona State University. A three-part invention is a miniature fugue.

Enjoy.

  • Scott Joplin, Peacherine Rag
  • Domenico Scarlatti, Sonata in B-flat major (K. 57, Longo S. 38)
  • G. F. Händel, Air: The Harmonious Blacksmith
  • Louis Warshawsky, Three-Part Invention (1983)

  • Forms of Address

In writing, Mr. Warshawsky usually prefers to spell out his first name completely. In speech, most of his family, friends and colleagues call him Lou. For French speakers, close friends and beautiful women, he will answer to Louie. People trying to sell him something should call him Mr. Warshawsky.
